Surf and skate spots

The waves breaking in front of Calle México and nearby, with the level they need and the best season. They are volcanic rock reefs: if you are a beginner, go with a school.

La Izquierda (Spanish Left)

Fast, hollow left over a volcanic reef, up to about 100 m.

Level
Intermediate; experts only when it gets big
Best season
October to March, north-west swell
Watch out for
Shallow rock on the way out; always crowded

El Medio

The peak between La Izquierda and La Derecha, in front of Calle México. It is where beginners practise and where the street's surf schools teach.

Level
Beginners
Best season
October to March, like the peaks next to it
Watch out for
Rock bottom; lots of people learning, give them space

La Derecha del Cartel

Right-hander over reef in front of the Metropolis building, with long walls and tube sections.

Level
Intermediate and advanced
Best season
October to March, north-west swell
Watch out for
Quick take-off and shallow reef

El Conquistador

Beach with a reef of stones and sand, rights and lefts. The mellowest spot in the area.

Level
Beginners and improvers
Best season
Mid tide, rising; often flat in summer
Watch out for
Rocks at the shoreline

La Fitenia

Reef towards Los Cristianos, a right (the better side) and a left. The summer wave.

Level
Intermediate
Best season
May to August, south swell
Watch out for
Very busy when it works

Before you paddle out

  • Check the wave and wind forecast first: in summer the south coast is often flat, except with a south swell.
  • The bottom is rock: booties help getting in and out.
  • Respect priority and the locals: the peaks get busy.
  • If you are starting out, book with a local school; to improve, try the video analysis.

Skate

Las Américas skatepark, C. Siete Islas, next to the Guardia Civil station: concrete ramps and obstacles. The Vill skate school (federated, from age 6) teaches here. The shop is outside the area, in Los Cristianos: Vill Skateshop on the map · skate school. Other parks nearby: Ten-Bel (Costa del Silencio) and Playa Paraíso (Adeje).
