Surfing Playa de Las Américas: the Calle México spots
The season is starting. From October to March, with north-west swell, the reefs in front of Calle México wake up and the street fills with boards. If you are coming to surf the south of Tenerife, here is a quick guide to the spots a few steps away.
La Izquierda (Spanish Left)
A fast, hollow left on a volcanic reef, up to about 100 metres long. For intermediate surfers; when it's big, experts only. Watch the shallow rock on the way out: it's always busy.
El Medio
Between La Izquierda and La Derecha, right in front of Calle México. It's the beginners' peak, where the schools on the street give their lessons. Rock bottom and lots of people learning: give them space.
La Derecha del Cartel
A reef right-hander in front of the Metropolis building, with long walls and barrel sections. For intermediate and advanced surfers: the take-off is quick and the bottom is shallow.
El Conquistador
A beach with a reef of rocks and sand, with rights and lefts. It's the mellowest spot in the area, good for beginners and progression. It works best on a mid tide rising; in summer it is often flat.
La Fitenia
A reef towards Los Cristianos, with a right (the best one) and a left. It's the summer wave, from May to August with south swell. For intermediate surfers, and very crowded when it's on.
Before you paddle out
- Check the wave and wind forecast before you go.
- The bottom is rock: reef booties help you get in and out.
- Respect priority and the locals, because the peaks get busy.
